Photoroom was founded in 2019, and over the past 5 years has carved out a niche in the commerce photography and design space. It is now the world’s most popular AI photo-editing and design app, and has been downloaded over 200 million times in over 180 countries. Photoroom is in the top 6 most used generative AI products in the world.
Photoroom first found success with its best-in-class background remover. It has now expanded its offering to include a batch photo editor, and a suite of AI design and photography tools including AI Backgrounds, AI Shadows, AI Images, and AI Fill.
Photoroom is headquartered in Paris, and has grown to a company of over 80 employees.
Matthieu Rouif, the co-founder and CEO of Photoroom, had a background in app development and product management. While working as a Product Manager at GoPro, he became frustrated with the time-consuming process of manually removing backgrounds in Photoshop. He realized that he was not alone in this frustration, and that there was a demand for a better solution on the App Store.
This led Matthieu to study machine learning, where he developed prototypes that mixed machine learning and mobile apps. After the course, he met with Eliot Andres, a machine learning expert, and together they created the first version of Photoroom in just two weeks.

Matt Rouif, co-founder & CEO of Photoroom, has 15 years in building photo editing apps and a decade in AI. He started Photoroom to combine both and make photo editing accessible with AI.
As a fresh Polytechnique and Stanford graduate, Matt started working on photo apps while still on campus. He then created the first mobile apps for ski resorts and co-founded the HeyCrowd app to make surveys more social. Later on, he led product for Replay Video Editor. After leading all image editing products at GoPro when they acquired Replay, Matt left GoPro in 2018 to start Photoroom.

With 8 years of experience in deep learning and computer vision, Eliot Andres co-founded Photoroom with the goal of leveraging AI to make image editing accessible to everyone. Today, he focuses on Generative AI, image customization APIs, and developing Photoroom’s cross-platform rendering engine.
